THE HUNDRED DRESSES-(i) WORD MEANINGS

Scuffling of feet – noisy, dragging movements of the feet on the ground

Contrary – opposite in nature, direction, or meaning.

Didn’t hang right – didn’t fit properly

Hopscotch – a game in which children hop into and over squares marked on the ground

Nudge – a gentle push

Surrounded – be all round (someone or something).

Courteous – polite, respectful, or considerate in manner.

Incredulously – showing unwillingness to believe

Exclaimed – cry out suddenly in surprise, strong emotion, or pain.

Stolidly – not showing any feeling

Bursting – break open or apart suddenly and violently, especially as a result of an impact or internal pressure.

Shrieks – utter a high-pitched piercing sound or words, especially as an expression of terror, pain, or excitement.

Exaggerated – represent (something) as being larger, better, or worse than it really is.

Politeness – Politeness is the practical application of good manners or etiquette

Inseparable – unable to be separated or treated separately.

Disguise – give (someone or oneself) a different appearance in order to conceal one’s identity.

Target – here, a person deliberately chosen for attack

Trimming – small pieces trimmed off something.
